Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp., the world's biggest oil company, plans a flaring at its refinery in Torrance, California, during which gas will be released into the air, a state-run regulator reported.
The flaring will begin at about 4:40 p.m. local time tomorrow and last through Sept. 28, until about midnight, according to the Web site of the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
The release in the flare is estimated to exceed the 500,000 standard cubic feet of vent gas combusted, the Web site said.
The refinery, which can process an average of 155,000 barrels of crude oil a day, is undergoing a planned maintenance program on several units. The flare is often used during the start-up of certain units. Refinery spokeswoman Caroline Keith didn't immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
Refiners are required to report planned flares if they exceed certain daily limits of gases or chemicals that are determined by the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
The Torrance refinery is located about 20 miles south of Los Angeles and is one of six that Irving, Texas-based Exxon Mobil owns in the U.S.
